Fontana was founded in 1913 and within a few years it became known for its citrus orchards, vineyards and chicken ranches. In the 1950’s Fontana was home to Mickey Thompson’s Fontana International Dragway and is now the site for NASCAR’s Auto Club Speedway which opened an NHRA-sanctioned drag strip in Fontana in mid-2006 to resurrect Fontana’s drag-racing heritage. | |
Fontana’s current economy is driven largely by industrial uses, particularly trucking-based industries including some large distribution centers. It has many new communities due to the recent real estate growth in the 2000’s. |
